Gas Detonation Claims Three Law Enforcement Officers Amid Property Removal Operation in Northern Italy
A trio of officers were killed and no fewer than 15 additional individuals sustained injuries in an apparently intentional blast caused by gas at a farmhouse in northern Italy.
How It Happened
The detonation was triggered as police and firefighters went into the residence near the city of Verona to execute an removal notice for three siblings who were older adults.
The three officers killed belonged to the Carabinieri force.
Arrests and Aftermath
A man and a woman were taken into custody at the scene and a third person who escaped subsequent to the blast was apprehended shortly later. The trio have been admitted to the hospital.
The explosion could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the scene displayed the property reduced to a mass of wreckage.
“This moment calls for sorrow,” said the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who added that attempts had been made to displace the three family members in the previous occasions.
Financial Context
The leader of the Veneto area, President Zaia, explained the farmhouse was subject to an removal notice due to debts accrued by the property owners.
Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to talk with the family members who had locked themselves into the property. When the officers came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect a family member triggered the explosion.
“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander the police commander told news outlets.
A propane tank had been activated, and the explosion precisely impacted our members,” he added.
Petrol bombs were also discovered at the residence, the minister said.
Casualties and Damage
The wounded by the blast included an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as three members of Italy's state police and a fire services member.
As stated by the local prosecutor, the property was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.
He was convinced the blast had taken place on a floor above the entrance and informed journalists it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the blast, he mentioned members had “detected a whistling noise, probably the gas canisters being activated”.
Neighbor Statements
“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents told reporters, noting that the family members had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than vacate the property.
“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
Minister of Defence the Defence Minister stood alongside other political leaders in commemorating the three officers who had died in the line of duty.
