Former Treasury Secretary Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board

Board Resignation
The economist stated he would step back from public duties after legislative body made public his regular communications with the financier

One-time economic leader Larry Summers is leaving the governing body at OpenAI, just days after a collection of emails between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became widely known.

The economist stated in a statement that he was "thankful for the chance to have participated, optimistic about the prospects of the company, and anticipate observing their advancement".

The former Harvard president, who previously presided over the prestigious university, stated on earlier this week that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his relationship with the convicted sex offender.

Email Communications

The recently released communications revealed that the official corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the 24 hours preceding Epstein's 2019 arrest for suspected trafficking of underage individuals.

In additional comments, the AI firm expressed it understood Summers' decision to step down.

"We value his significant contributions and the viewpoint he brought to the governing body," OpenAI commented.

Legislative Background

This development follows after the entire Congress of Congress voted on this week to pass a legislation that would require the federal prosecutors to disclose its files on Jeffrey Epstein.

The measure will then head to the office of US President Donald Trump for signature. Trump has indicated he intends to sign the measure, after modifying his position on the matter following pressure from his base.

Message Details

A collection of Epstein-related messages released by the Congressional committee days ago mentioned several high-profile figures in the Epstein's previous network, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those figures.

The emails revealed that Summers and the financier often met for meals, with he often seeking to connect the academic to influential world leaders.

Personal Accountability

After the emails were made available with the public, he said he assumed "total ownership for my poor choice to continue interacting with the financier".

He added that he hoped "to reestablish confidence and fix connections with the persons closest to me".

Previous Positions

The professor occupied high-level positions under party leaders; functioning as economic leader under the former president, and as head of the National Economic Council under the former leader.

He headed Harvard from the early 2000s and is still a professor there. When stating his departure from public commitments recently on Monday, he stated he would continue his academic responsibilities.

Further Repercussions

Following his announcement on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a left-leaning think tank in Washington where Summers was a researcher, confirmed that the economist was not connected with the organization.

Summers entered the leadership of the technology firm, which develops ChatGPT, in the previous year - following a failed attempt to oust its chief executive Sam Altman.
